The eighth installment of Dominic Chen’s series Fermentation and Generation: The “Beast Paths” — An Alternative to Information Technology, titled “What Is ‘Fermentation of Thought’”, has been published in the web magazine Plain living, high thinking.
Through a reflection on the first six months of Pickles’ development, “fermentation of thought” is redefined not as a process that takes place within AI, but as a phenomenon that occurs within the writer’s body and consciousness. Writing a journal is an act of putting memories into words and rereading them in order to reactivate one’s questions. Pickles does not directly generate fermentation; rather, it plays a role similar to that of kōji mold, rephrasing journal entries from a different perspective and supporting the writer’s reflection. Going forward, the project explores the possibility of encouraging deeper reflection through features such as adjustable writing styles.
