The fifth installment of the series Lessons with the Non-human: an auto/ethnography of Entanglements, titled "Continuing to Coexist with the Dead," was published in the May 2026 issue of Sekai (Iwanami Shoten). Extending the question of "receiving life" that arose around hunting into the relationships we hold with the dead—both intimate humans and other species—this article draws on Vinciane Despret's Au Bonheur des Morts to consider a perspective that grasps the dead not as a loss to be overcome, but as beings otherwise "instaured" (instaurer) within the world of the living. Weaving in Han Kang's The White Book as well as my own experiences of mourning, it explores a mode of relating that arises between the living and the dead—one of receiving the questions the dead pose to us, being granted their lives, and continuing to be together with them.
