The second installment of the series Lessons with the Non-human: an auto/ethnography of Entanglements, titled “Becoming Other Species Imaginatively,” was published in the February 2026 issue of Sekai (Iwanami Shoten). Drawing on Jakob von Uexküll’s concept of Umwelt, this article examines how humans imaginatively take on the umwelten of other species—such as cats and microorganisms—and how this process transforms perception and action. Through practices where perception, imagination, and scientific knowledge intersect, the series continues to explore ways of relating that move beyond a human-centered worldview, attending to the entanglements that arise with other species and with the dead.
